Developing Outcome-Based Accountability within a Collaborative Partnership

How to develop outcome-based accountability within the context of a collaborative partnership while maximizing compliance, getting good results and strengthening the collaborative as a whole.

A good collaboration incorporates a broad sense of ownership in an effort, but with a necessary (and appropriate) loss of centralized control. It is quite likely that individuals within a collaborative will have different standards by which they judge progress, and ultimately, these differing standards can lead to fractiousness within the collaboration. Outcome-based accountability creates a methodology that clarifies the standards by which the collaborative’s progress will be judged by both the collaborators and those outside of the collaboration.

In its ideal form, a collaborative partnership brings out the best in a community by allowing an initiative to tap into the best talent and resources, as well as a strong sense of personal commitment that a community has to offer. Building and participating in collaborative partnerships relies on the participants’ creativity, using their intuition to build partnerships with a holistic approach to service delivery. On the other hand, outcome measurements rely on analytical and logical thinking for monitoring progression towards a previously identified goal.

This workshop will address how to develop outcome-based accountability within the context of a collaborative partnership while minimizing fear and intimidation within the collaborative. Specifically, the workshop will include:

  • How to develop program indicators within a collaborative model, using a variety of decision-making models (i.e. consensus-based, democratic, representative, etc.)
  • How to identify and best utilize the resources and supports that currently exist around developing outcome-based accountability
  • How to address some of the fears associated with developing and monitoring program indicators
  • How to strengthen a collaborative through the use of outcome-based accountability
  • How to improve compliance within the collaborative around the tracking and measurement of progress towards performance indicators
